BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide with the sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV. The sequence is traced back to a protein segment that the group which first described it identified in gastric juice; the parent protein has not been independently isolated and sequenced outside that group. The substance belongs to the class of short-chain, non-glycosylated peptides and has no single, clearly assigned receptor target; in the preclinical literature it is discussed in connection with the nitric oxide system and the VEGFR2 signalling cascade. BPC-157 has been the subject of studies primarily in in vitro systems and animal models of tissue and regeneration research, for example on fibroblast migration, angiogenesis and connective tissue models. The available data come predominantly from rodent models; robust clinical evidence in humans is not available.
