Epithalon (synonym: Epitalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG) and therefore belongs to the short-chain, low-molecular-weight peptides. It was developed as a synthetic analogue of a peptide extract of the pineal gland that has been described in peptide research since the 1970s. In preclinical research, AEDG is studied above all in the context of telomere biology, telomerase expression and cellular senescence. No classical membrane receptor target has been described to date; the literature discusses effects at the level of gene expression. The available work comes predominantly from cell culture and animal models and traces back in large part to a single research group; independent replications are rare.

Store the lyophilisate sealed in its original container at 2–8 °C, dry and protected from light. For longer storage periods, keep it at −20 °C. Avoid repeated temperature changes and the ingress of moisture. Shipping takes place without a cold chain; the lyophilisate is stable at ambient temperature over the shipping period. Do not keep it in living or food areas, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Handling in the lab

Handle in a suitable laboratory environment with a lab coat, safety glasses and disposable gloves. Allow the refrigerated container to reach room temperature before opening so that no condensation settles on the lyophilisate. Do not shake the vial, protect it from mechanical stress and direct light, and return it to storage sealed immediately after handling.
